英语 abbreviate 经中古英语 abbreviaten 借自晚期拉丁 abbreviātus（abbreviāre 的过去分词），最终关联 brevis“短”。法语 abréger 亦源自 abbreviare；abréviation 借自拉丁 abbreviatio。英语 abbreviation 经盎格鲁法语 abreviation 借自拉丁 abbreviātiō，是相关名词，不能只说成现代英语动词加后缀。 [2] [5] [6] [7]

English：brevis → abbreviāre → abbreviātus → Middle English abbreviaten → abbreviate。ab- 在这里不能照拼写机械解释成“离开”；MW 的教学词源注明 earlier ad- + brevis。 [2]
