I remember listening to Western classical music in middle school and being seized by intense imagination. Let the imagining continue: as the objects and figures of visible reality gradually dissolved, a light perfectly joined to the music seemed to rise through the spaces between notes. It was like light diffracting through an infinitesimal opening, suddenly becoming bright, spacious and clear—an entrance into the world of one’s inner eye, beyond the reach of words. When I heard the celebrated music of Qionghua’s martyrdom in The Red Detachment of Women, what came to mind was not the ballet scene but something almost religious: the Reformation and wars of fifteenth-century Germany, perhaps, or the transformation of modern China as another immense revolution of thought. Seen from a great distance, perhaps these were our Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the Tuotuo River and Geladandong, the Bayan Har Mountains—the mountain spirit itself changing. We may acknowledge this or not. Each person understands music in a different way. Music, in its singular power, needs no words.

Where does our light come from? It suddenly occurred to me that the brightness and darkness outside us may have been given by someone from an age beyond ages. Then where does our own light arise? Let it begin with my practice now. What is the Great Perfection? What is the supreme wisdom of complete perfection? I had known these names for almost thirty years without understanding them, yet I had always loved them. Whenever I heard or saw them, I felt longing, though I did not know precisely what they meant. I hoped that by studying Buddhism, Daoism, Christianity, Hinduism and other traditions I might understand. Today, at last, I understood: in looking at this world, this universe, I had divided self from other. This question troubled me for decades; it was a pain carried from childhood onward, and I could not resolve it. Today I see it. Twenty years ago a friend said I would awaken to something; perhaps now I have. One day, seeking quiet, I closed the bathroom door and found myself in darkness. Again the thought came: perhaps the light and dark outside were given by someone from inconceivably long ago—but where does my own light come from? Let it begin with my practice now. I spoke of this sudden thought with several clients, and they too seemed touched by an insight. Today, through writing, I understood: perhaps it is not the Buddha who saves me; I save and carry myself across. Light exists of itself, is possessed from the beginning, and depends on nothing outside. Perhaps it is a recurrence of that first cosmic explosion.

Youth passes, yet perhaps that radiant smile remains. Is the Dharma not a way for time to cease fleeing, to rest at the point and age where we wish to remain—forever sixteen? If we travel the road at the speed of light, always practicing and always awakening the mind of bodhi, is that not accomplishment? May we step out from the past and follow the footsteps of the sun, revealing the fullness of our youth.

Does the beauty and joy of what I love belong to the thing itself, or to the pleasure in my mind? A mechanical materialist might say that pleasure travels along my nerves into my brain. But then where does the pleasure in my brain go? Biology tells us that each arm of an octopus has its own neural centre and can directly feel pain and pleasure. Distant rain-soaked mountains and waters, bound to me by affinity—does the pulse of my heart agree with yours, mean what you mean? What was this place a thousand years ago? Probably only mountains, cloud and rain. Dense forest would have brought abundant water, and little rivers would have moved through the trees, sometimes swift and sometimes slow, like the streams we still hear today. A river once ran down the southern face of Mount Royal to the St. Lawrence. Perhaps the road named Atwater preserves its memory. These are only a few gentle hills, a hundred metres high, yet they gave birth to flowing rivers whose small waves rose and fell. A child was born in the morning; a feng-shui master noted that eight o’clock was the hour of the dragon, corresponding to a nearby river. The correspondence of time and space is a nondual wonder. Ten thousand years ago this was an ice age, the hills buried under heavy snow and ice, a boundless, austere landscape. It waits for my light to be emitted. And where does my light come from? The light that seems to exceed our idea of time becomes sound upon the ground—a sound wave made by sunlight—telling us to rise and stand, to face the direction from which light comes, toward that city in the sky. The music is extremely simple, yet filled with ascending notes and an atmosphere of gathering the heart and returning home. There seems no need to take refuge in anything; understanding arises naturally. The beginning is present as it always was: time returns to its origin, space returns here, to the place where the foot comes down now. It is a Zen of moonlight. Can the chain of time, as I understand it, be compressed into a single point of air, allowing me to see the light revealed within your words? The radiance carried between written words—by people and beings at different moments on my own axis of time, or perhaps on another axis entirely—breaks into points we can perceive. They carry awakening toward boundless beings across the sky: wherever space and time exist, there are beings whom the light-thought I have become may inspire, until all become an ocean of luminosity.

Through the contrast of sounds rising and falling, a fresh, fragrant beauty awakens imagination.

Memory, longing and thought. The flowers of May slowly open at last with the glittering, late-arriving spring. Waiting for spring in the north is agonizing, just as the bright sunlight of the Dharma does not easily arrive before me. Looking toward the distant sun from grass beside the river, I feel as though I steer the earth itself like a ship. The sun becomes a direction: travel toward the sun. Amid the vast seas of humanity, water, stars and darkness, I am fortunate and exhilarated to choose the sun. This middle-strength star, still in its mature life, shines upon a vigorous Earth at a fitting distance. Does this suggest an analogous direction in my own realm of thought? Not merely hint, but plainly show that the bright pearl of truth lifted by the Buddha is before my eyes? I wish to enter at once the register illuminated by that pearl, to meet it and become as beautiful as painting and music.

Looking across ancient Indian philosophy—from the standpoint of modern geography—we find related ideas in ancient China, including the story of Pangu opening heaven and earth. Traditions of primordial creation also appear among the Miao, while the Indian account of Brahma offers a resemblance of its own. Perhaps people of those eras had not yet recognised, or had not yet focused upon, causal relation, and so waited within thought for endless cycles of rebirth. One can sense this in broad historical materials and in the religions of those times. The Buddha made causality—and teachings such as the twelve links of dependent arising—clear to others. Perhaps it was because of the longing of those connected to him that he could not bear simply to enter nirvana, and instead taught the truth he had seen, discovered and experienced. Consider the mathematics, science, language, music and art we now study: each develops through relations of cause and effect, unfolding into beauty and giving me a wise way to understand the world. Perhaps other beings do not possess this same form of wisdom.
